Why these amounts
- About 1,600 calories a day per person from rice, lentils and milk. A ration, boring on purpose.
- Water is the hard part in an apartment. You can't store 90 gallons a person, so you store a week (the bathtub bladder holds 100 gallons if filled when trouble starts) and filter the rest.
- Where it goes: everything is a flat bag, jug or small box, so for one or two people it fits under one bed. Three or four people need a second bed. No buckets.
- Nothing to repack: leave the rice and lentils in their sealed bags. They keep 4–5 years in a cool, dry spot. Write the date on them and buy fresh bags then. The gear doesn't expire.
- Your own medicine: ask your doctor to write your prescriptions as 90-day refills. Most insurance allows it, and then you always have a spare month or two at home.
- Not included: a copy of your documents, and cash.
